To honor the commitment and sacrifice of our public servants, we are offering a 50% tuition discount for incoming students who are employed, or students whose parent, legal guardian, or spouse is employed full-time at a non-profit organization, in public service, healthcare, ministry, or education.

More Information

  • Students whose parent, legal guardian, or spouse is currently employed full-time as a first responder, in education, healthcare, ministry, public service, or at a non-profit are eligible. Examples of eligible employment include, but are not limited to:
    • Healthcare providers
    • Churches and ministry-related work
    • U.S. military
    • First responders (police, EMT, firefighters)
    • Teachers and school administrators
  • Participating students must be enrolled full-time.
  • Students must be either a new freshman or transfer student to the institution.
  • Active duty military students receive tuition at the current tuition assistance rate. The tuition assistance program offers a larger benefit to students than the Community Commitment. Students who have a guardian who has served in the U.S. military institutions may qualify.
  • Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA and make satisfactory academic progress for Community Commitment renewal.
  • The Community Commitment ensures that eligible students will have, at a minimum, half of their McMurry University tuition covered by institutional funds. In addition to the Community Commitment, students may still be eligible for other institutional scholarships and need-based grants such as the Pell grant and Texas Equalization Grant (TEG).
    • If an eligible student’s institutional sources of aid do not equal 50% of tuition, McMurry will award Community Commitment funds for the remaining amount.
  • A FAFSA is not required for eligibility, but we strongly encourage all students to submit one.
  • Federal and state need-based grants, such as PELL and TEG, do not count towards the 50% Community Commitment. Students eligible for these grant programs will receive these funds in addition to their Community Commitment award.
  • Room, board, and fees are not included in the Community Commitment.
  • Students enrolled in the Aides to Teach and Blue Streak programs are not eligible but will receive a reduced tuition rate.

How do I apply to receive the Community Commitment?
Let us know you are eligible on the McMurry undergraduate application. We’ll ask you for your parent, guardian, or spouse information and their place of employment. If you did not supply this information on your undergraduate application, you can fill out a Community Commitment application form inside your application portal.

Can I receive more scholarships and financial aid in addition to the Community Commitment?
Yes! Make sure you complete your application by submitting high school/college transcripts and test scores (if you don’t apply test-optional) and submit a FAFSA. Once we get your completed application and FAFSA, we’ll send you a total award package that will include the Community Commitment if you are eligible.

What if I’m not eligible?
That’s ok. The large majority of McMurry students receive financial aid, and ALL approved students will receive a merit-based scholarship. We want McMurry to be an affordable option for you, and we have tons of scholarships to make it happen.

Do I have to live on campus to receive the Community Commitment?
No. Commuter and local students are eligible too.

Do I have to select a specific major or program to receive the Community Commitment?
No. All majors are eligible for consideration.

How do I know my spouse, guardian, or myself is employed at an eligible organization or institution?
While not always true, most non-profits or public service organizations have websites that end with .edu, .gov, or .org. Chances are if you or a loved one works at a place like this, you qualify. If you are unsure, contact the Admission Office, and we’ll let you know.
