About the Program

Are you a curious student who thinks outside the box and wants to take your college education as far as possible?  If so, the McMurry Honors Program is for you.  We offer honors classes that emphasize creativity, critical thinking, and discussion.  During the senior year, students dig into a research topic or a creative project in their major fields for their honors thesis.  Our students work closely with their professors on research teams, travel courses, and other endeavors that broaden their horizons and prepare them for life after graduation.  Honors alums have gone on to great success in their careers, including gaining admission to highly selective professional schools in Texas and across the US.

The honors program makes college more interesting, not impossibly hard.  Many honors students participate in intercollegiate athletics, fine arts programs, student government, and other clubs and organizations throughout their four years at McMurry. The honors endowment often makes it possible for our students to participate in study abroad programs and other enriching opportunities.

Admission Criteria

While every student admitted to McMurry is eligible to apply for admission to the program, we especially encourage applications from students meeting one of the following criteria:  top 5% of high school class; high school GPA of 3.85; or 27 on the ACT (or SAT equivalent).  Transfer students with a college GPA of 3.5 are also encouraged to apply.   Once you are admitted to McMurry, you will submit the required honors application materials through the Admissions portal.  These include: a brief essay in response to the prompt found on the Admissions portal; a list of your activities and accomplishments in high school; and a letter of reference from an academic teacher.  After you submit those materials, the honors program interview is the last step of the admissions process.

Scholarships

The honors program offers students scholarships between $3,000-$5,000 a year in addition to your other McMurry financial aid.  In order to retain the scholarship, you must maintain a GPA of 3.5 and make progress toward graduation in honors.  Apply early, as the number of scholarships is limited.
