Our department of curriculum and instruction offers courses that cover the breadth of study necessary to prepare for a rich and rewarding career as an educator.

Early Childhood Education

If you’re interested in helping young children learn and develop essential skills, you’ll deepen your knowledge and gain practical experience by studying early childhood education. Your coursework will cover the breadth of early childhood education, preparing you for roles designing, implementing and assessing programs that support young learners’ healthy development. Your studies will cover early childhood development and teaching reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, art, physical education, drama and music to elementary students. Early Childhood Education ESL Endorsement and Bilingual Education

Through the study of early childhood education and bilingual education, you’ll develop the pedagogy and practice needed to succeed as an instructor in pre-K through grade 6 programs for all young students, including English language learners. Your coursework will cover theories and practices of education and will include additional training in English language acquisition and teaching within the ESL classroom. Multidisciplinary Studies II Grades 4-8

If you dream of a rewarding career shaping the minds of elementary and middle-grade students, you’ll find this diverse course of study to be a perfect way to pursue your passion for education. In the multidisciplinary studies program, you’ll choose your teaching field — science, social studies, mathematics, or English language arts and reading — and gain the preparation necessary to teach students in grades 4-8. Multidisciplinary Studies I Grades 7-12

If you can’t wait to teach your favorite subject in the middle and high school classrooms, look no further than the multidisciplinary studies program in grades 7-12. This major will allow you to earn a degree in four years with your teaching field of choice. You’ll start with a foundation in educational theory and solidify your understanding through clinical teaching experience. With your degree and teaching certification, you will be well-equipped to lead middle and high school classrooms. McMurry University’s FasTrack Certification program provides an express-education option to get you teaching in a classroom quicker. Student Opportunities

Association of Texas Professional Educators

Students can join the McMurry chapter of the Association of Texas Professional Educators. ATPE actively meets and hosts guest speakers on campus. Members also have the opportunity to participate in state and regional meetings. ATPE

Honor Society

McMurry is home to the Eta Epsilon chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education. Dedicated to scholarship and excellence in education, the mission of Kappa Delta Pi is to recognize education majors and minors who have a 3.25 GPA, have completed one semester of curriculum coursework and have at least 45 credit hours at McMurry. Each year, the department of curriculum and instruction awards four scholarships to outstanding juniors or seniors in the department.

Honors Program

Departmental honors might be a good fit if you’re looking for a way to set even higher goals and accomplish more during your time at McMurry. Teacher Education Program

A liberal education combined with adequate professional and specialized study constitutes the best preparation for a successful teaching career. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at McMurry University offers the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education degree and the professional development (Curr) minor to qualify students for the Texas Provisional Teaching Certificate. The Provisional Certificate gives the holder legal authority to perform teaching duties in the public schools of Texas at the grade level and in the academic specialization(s) designated on the face of the certificate. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, with the advisement of the Education Advisory Council, is responsible for establishing policy and providing leadership for the teacher education program. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of teacher education, several departments of the University are represented on the Education Advisory Council. The administration of McMurry University strives to promote a close, cooperative relationship between the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the other academic departments of the University. The teacher education program at McMurry is accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
