Greetings from the McMurry University Department of Mathematics. At McMurry, our well-qualified faculty provides a high-quality education in the field of mathematics, as well as the specific training needed to build a career teaching mathematics to primary and secondary school students. These career tracks require full fluency in specific sub-fields of mathematics, including basics such as algebra, geometry and calculus, along with advanced areas like differential equations, mathematical proofs, and statistics and numerical analysis. An academic career in physics, engineering or economics often has its beginnings with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. Alternatively, a minor in mathematics can be obtained by taking 19 credit hours of coursework.
Areas of Study
The study of mathematics encompasses the skills upon which almost all scientific analysis and modeling are based. We offer three undergraduate degree majors (all Bachelor of Science degrees), as well as a minor program.
Mathematics
Mathematics is a field of study that contributes to virtually every area of human inquiry, especially the natural and social sciences. The Bachelor of Science in mathematics at McMurry is designed to be flexible. In addition to required core modules, you can select from a wide range of electives. This bachelor’s degree is for anyone who seeks to gain certification teaching mathematics to students in grades 4-8. You’ll learn all you need to know about basic and advanced math and how to reach out to young students in the classroom. This major requires you to take a minor in curriculum and instruction. The Bachelor of Science grades 7-12 provides the skills to teach more advanced mathematical principles to junior high and high school students. You’ll learn basic and advanced mathematical techniques, as well as the pedagogical and classroom management skills you’ll need to teach teenagers. Scholarships and Awards
Annual awards are presented by the department of mathematics each spring, with individual awards for outstanding freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. In addition, several scholarships are awarded to exceptional students. A junior is awarded the Jennie Tate, Clyde A. and Mary Long Memorial Scholarship, which can be used in that student’s senior year; a sophomore is awarded the Dr. Bill Dulin Memorial Scholarship; and a freshman, sophomore or junior is awarded the Paula McCoun Memorial Scholarship.Departmental Honors

Academic Enrichment CenterWilliam Lowell Putnam Competition
All McMurry students are invited to participate in the national William Lowell Putnam Competition every year, the preeminent mathematics competition for undergraduate college students in the U.S. and Canada. During two three-hour sessions, students work individually on six challenging mathematical problems. The Putnam Competition is held on campus on the first Saturday in December.
